It's more powerful and offers security advantages not found in the other file systems. But let's go over the differences among the files systems so we're all clear about the choice. There are essentially three different file systems available in Windows XP: FAT16, short for File Allocation Table, FAT32, and NTFS, short for NT File System.

FAT16

The FAT16 file system was introduced way back with MS–DOS in 1981, and it's showing its age. It was designed originally to handle files on a floppy drive, and has had minor modifications over the years so it can handle hard disks, and even file names longer than the original limitation of 8.3 characters, but it's still the lowest common denominator. The biggest advantage of FAT16 is that it is compatible across a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows 95/98/Me, OS/2, Linux, and some versions of UNIX. The biggest problem of FAT16 is that it has a fixed maximum number of clusters per partition, so as hard disks get bigger and bigger, the size of each cluster has to get larger. In a 2–GB partition, each cluster is 32 kilobytes, meaning that even the smallest file on the partition will take up 32 KB of space. FAT16 also doesn't support compression, encryption, or advanced security using access control lists.

FAT32

The FAT32 file system, originally introduced in Windows 95 Service Pack 2, is really just an extension of the original FAT16 file system that provides for a much larger number of clusters per partition. As such, it greatly improves the overall disk utilization when compared to a FAT16 file system. However, FAT32 shares all of the other limitations of FAT16, and adds an important additional limitation—many operating systems that can recognize FAT16 will not work with FAT32—most notably Windows NT, but also Linux and UNIX as well. Now this isn't a problem if you're running FAT32 on a Windows XP computer and sharing your drive out to other computers on your network—they don't need to know (and generally don't really care) what your underlying file system is.

The NTFS file system, introduced with first version of Windows NT, is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides for greatly increased security, file–by–file compression, quotas, and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Windows XP, and if you're doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, you'll be asked if you want to convert your existing file systems to NTFS. Don't worry. If you've already upgraded to Windows XP and didn't do the conversion then, it's not a problem. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. Just remember that you can't easily go back to FAT or FAT32 (without reformatting the drive or partition), not that I think you'll want to.

The NTFS file system is generally not compatible with other operating systems installed on the same computer, nor is it available when you've booted a computer from a floppy disk. For this reason, many system administrators, myself included, used to recommend that users format at least a small partition at the beginning of their main hard disk as FAT. This partition provided a place to store emergency recovery tools or special drivers needed for reinstallation, and was a mechanism for digging yourself out of the hole you'd just dug into. But with the enhanced recovery abilities built into Windows XP (more on that in a future column), I don't think it's necessary or desirable to create that initial FAT partition.

When to Use FAT or FAT32

If you're running more than one operating system on a single computer , you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume—any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. In many cases, this is even possible over a network. So do not store sensitive files on drives or partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

To help make computers more like our language-based way of thinking, groups of bits are joined into bytes. One byte is comprised of 8 bits. A set of 8 bits was chosen because this provides 256 total possibilities which is sufficient for specifying letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and other extended characters. This very sentence, for example is composed of 125 bytes because there are 125 letters, digits, spaces and punctuation marks.

Note: Keep in mind that we are discussing pure text; some word processing programs, include other sorts of formatting data and therefore the filesizes will be greater than the number of characters in the file.

4. Boot Faster: The ’starting Windows 95/98′ message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds. To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys. Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text ‘Options’ within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don’t then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often: Windows 98’s Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

11. Take your PC to Bed: Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command. That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it. It’s as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up. Backing up Data in Windows XP:

A backup wizard is provided with the Windows package which is very helpful to create a backup copy of your important documents.

Note: If you have Windows XP Professional, Backup utility is installed by default but in Windows XP Home it is not. However, Backup utility is provided with the CD.

Go to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP and double click Ntbackup.msi to start the Backup utility.

Follow this procedure to backup data using Backup utility:

Step 1: Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup.
Step 2: Click Next in the first page and choose ‘Back up Files and Settings’ in the second page.
Step 3: In the third page, you will be asked what to backup. If you have the habit of keeping all important files in your ‘My Documents’ folder and you want to backup only important files then choosing ‘My documents and settings’ would be more appropriate. Else if you want to manually choose the files and folders you want to backup, choose the option ‘Let me choose what to backup’.

Step 4: If you are manually choosing the folders, click all the folders you want to backup.
Step 5: On the next screen you will be asked to choose the backup type, Destination and Name. You won’t be using Tapes or Floppy Disks. You may select an external hard disk or another partition in the same hard disk. If the backup file size is small you may choose small portable pen drive such as USB hard drives.
Step 6: Windows XP does not support to write the backup file to a CD directly. So if you want to have the backup in a CD or DVD, create the backup file in the same hard disk and burn it in a CD or DVD.

If you have dedicated external hard disk for backup you can set a schedule to backup regularly. On the last page of backup utility before clicking Finish, Click Advanced -> When to Back up -> Later -> Set Schedule -> Schedule Job. Set the schedule and Click Ok.

Step 3: Choose the drives you want to backup and choose the type of files you want to backup. System files, executable files won’t be backed up and backup can be done only from NTFS region.
Step 4: In the next screen choose how often you want to take backup and click ‘Save settings and start backup’.

1) One can actually just write all the files he wants to have a backup copy in a DVD or an external hard disk, but why use backup utility? That’s because when you do it manually, every time you do a change in a file or folder you have to keep track of it and do the same changes in the backup copy. 2) An ideal method of using backup utility will be to take the backup of documents using the backup utility and to copy the files such as Audio files, Video files and pictures in a DVD as the capacity of DVD is increasing day by day.

3) Backup regularly or use scheduled backup facility.

4) If you are using more than one medium for backup, keep a track of what you are backing-up and where you are taking the backup.

5) Keep another copy of important files in a smaller device like pen drive, So that you can carry it around very easily. But remember to use security utilities to keep the content under lock or encrypted.

Based on the priority a specific application receives, bandwidth is allocated to it. Mainly QoS aware applications are considered under this setting. When you click on the “QoS Packet Scheduler” on the right panel, the followings options will show up,

You will see the following entry in the list, “Limit reservable bandwidth”. This option determines what percentage of your total bandwidth is reserved by the system for various system specific tasks like automatic windows update or antivirus update. Google recently posed an Open Challenge to Microsoft Windows for a fast, secure and efficient Operating System by announcing its next project of Google Chrome OS.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year Google will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. Google is designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. As in Google Chrome browser, Google is going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a standard for delivering long range broadband signals. WiMAX can be used for both mobile phones and computers.

WiMAX is different from WiFi. WiFi is unlicensed and broadcasts over a short range. Most Internet hot-spots in restaurants and hotels are currently WiFi, not WiMAX.

WiMAX uses licensed spectrum, just like cell phone carriers and radio stations. Although the signal degrades over distance, WiMAX signals could theoretically broadcast for 30 miles from a single point.

WiMAX can be combined with WiFi by placing a WiMAX receiver somewhere and broadcasting a WiFi signal from that station. This is how Clearwire suggests users share their Internet connection with a household.

Sprint and Clearwire created a new WiMAX company in 2008, which is also called Clearwire. Google is an investor in this new company.

Microsoft acknowledged the memo's authenticity -- it was sent from the company to computer manufacturers and retailers, representatives say -- and Microsoft has since gone on to elaborate about the plans.

"We’re committed to making Windows 7 available in Europe at the same time that it launches in the rest of the world, but we also must comply with European competition law as we launch the product," Dave Heiner, Microsoft's vice president and deputy general counsel, explains.

"Given the pending legal proceeding, we’ve decided that instead of including Internet Explorer in Windows 7 in Europe, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users," he says.

The European Windows 7 E editions, then, will function just like the regular Windows 7 offerings sold in America -- only without Internet Explorer automatically included. With that said, new computer users may still find IE on their systems, given the options Microsoft is providing for manufacturers to preinstall the program before shipping their PCs.

"Microsoft will ... make it easy and convenient for PC manufacturers to preinstall IE 8 on Windows 7 machines in Europe if they so choose," the original Microsoft memo is quoted as stating. "PC manufacturers may choose to install an alternative browser instead of IE 8, and [as] has always been the case, they may install multiple browsers if they wish."

The browserless approach wasn't Microsoft's only option: The European Commission, Heiner says, also discussed the company including IE and other browsers within Windows 7 by default. It also suggested a concept wherein users would be presented with a "ballot screen" that would allow them to pick their browser of choice during the initial setup process.

"Important details of these approaches would need to be worked out in coordination with the Commission, since they would have a significant impact on computer manufacturers and Web browser vendors, whose interests may differ," Heiner responds. "Given the complexity and competing interests, we don’t believe it would be best for us to adopt such an approach unilaterally."

For now, then, Windows 7 E is the answer -- at least, for Europe. Here in the States, you'll be getting the regular ol' Windows 7, Internet Explorer and all. Current Vista users are expected to be offered a $49.99 upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or a $99.99 upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. If you recently bought a new PC with Vista preloaded, you may also be eligible for Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Option, which would provide a cheaper or possibly even free upgrade to Windows 7. Microsoft, however, has yet to release the specific requirements of the upgrade program.

Just as Dell released its Studio One 19 (read our hands-on), Averatec is additionally jumping to that segment with the Averatec D1133, an 18.4″ (1680×945) all-in-one (AIO) computer that starts at $600 and that looks like a monitor glued on top of a netbook… Here’s what’s in the Averatec D1133:

Sony Ericsson Launches the XPERIA X1 in Korea with SKT

Wait, don’t cool phones usually come FROM Korea? Well, not in that instance, I guess. Sony Ericsson is just launching its XPERIA flagship smartphone in Korea with SK Telecom, the major player there. You’ve heard about the XPERIA X1 since last year when it was launched at WMC (recent coverage). But did you read the full X1 review?

We don’t think that there’s a restricted carrier in the U.S that is selling it. Too poor, as it is one of the better Windows Mobile devices.

Telefonica Markets Rebranded As Movistar

Telefonica already uses the Movistar type around the world, but there are still some services like Wireline that is under the Telefonica sort name. In a move to standardize those names, Telefonica has announced that all of its services around the world will be rebranded as Movistar, with O2 the only entity to survive that renaming process in the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia along with the Vivo grade in Brazil. Symbian Platform Development Schedule

Symbian might not be famed for coming up with platform updates in the past, but it certainly looks like it’s making a concentrated effort to do so. The latest platform release plan that has been made public by the Symbian Foundation shows that they’re serious, particularly since we’re looking at a new platform every six months. The new naming convention will be “Symbian^N”, where “N” is the version number. David Wood of the Symbian Foundation explains the naming convention:
The simplest way to pronounce “Symbian^2? is “Symbian two”… You can plus view the ‘^’ as an upside down ‘v’. So we’re telling the world that, in a way, we are intending to turn versioning upside down - by opening up our roadmap discussions to the entire community.

While it sounds pretty ordinary, bear in mind it comes in only a 1.8″ drive size, tipping the scales at a mere 3.7 ounces. It plays nice with both Mac OS X and Windows platforms, where the USB 2.0 model will go for $270 while the FireWire variant costs an additional $10. Cowon S9 Firmware Makes It Totally New

Cowon released a beta firmware update for it’s S9 portable media player, where it will introduce a whole bunch of widgets as well as pitch correction where video playback is concerned, turning the S9 into a virtually new device overnight while placing it closer to the Samsung P3 in terms of capability. While widgets are cool, they do tend to clutter up the S9’s home screen and compose the entire user experience more cumbersone. Hopefully the final firmware update (as well as future releases) will see Cowon address that user interface issue as the Samsung P3 is still the better amidst the two.

Nurian X40Kris Electronic Dictionary

Nurian is back with a make new electronic dictionary known as the X40Kris which will definitely sit down well beside your MacBook air considering its 21.3mm thin scheme factor which is pretty slim for a device that has 4.3″ of viewing real estate. In addition to XviD support, the X40Kris will plus be able to handle Flash videos and PDF files with aplomb. During your breaks, you can always whip it out to have some fun with the pre-loaded games, although we don’t expect it to be as engaging as those available on other more established platforms (cell phones, PSP and DS). Unfortunately for us, maximum storage on board stands at just 4GB, so it remains to be seen whether you would fork out $253 for that or not.

NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0 ‘Speaks’ Many File Systems

If you happen to have a mixed PC/Mac computing environment you might want to access hard drives formatted in NTFS. By doing so, you might bump into problems like file access restrictions and so on. In that case, Paragon’s NTFS for Max OS X 7.0 might come in handy. According to Paragon, its universal file system driver (UFSD) acts as a translator for all kinds of file systems, making read and writes from Mac OS X possible. Google Voice Announced

Google looks like it has taken another ambitious step towards dominating the World Wide Web. You may or may not have been following the news, but the Web behemoth has previously acquired a startup called GrandCentral. The goal is basically to simplify the way folks handle phone calls, voice mail and text messages. The service, which is now called Google Voice, allows users to route all their calls through a separate number that can ring their home, work and mobile phones at the same day, giving users a singled-out and easy-to-manage voice mail system for all their phone lines. Users will be able to prepare calls that are routed via the World Wide Web for free in the US and for a small fee internationally. Currently the service is only available to GrandCentral subscribers, but Google has promised that the general public will be able to use it in the coming weeks. From Uberphones.

Google Image Search For Your Mobile

The Google Mobile Team has announced its new Image Search for the Android, iPhone and iPod touch in the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. Users in these three countries can now search for images using keywords. Search results of up to 20 images per page will be displayed. There will be options to view the images on a larger thumbnail or through a website link or simply to view the images in their original sizes. CyberPower Bundles GeForce 3D with Their Gaming Systems

CyberPower has started bundling NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D stereo glasses with their Gamer Xtreme 3D Series high-end gaming PC. There are configurations with AMD or Intel CPUs, depending on your current allegiance/preference. Of course, it comes with a compatible monitor: a Samsung Syncmaster 2233RZ 22-inch that has a 120Hz. The GPU driving the 3D glasses is a GeForce 200 Series. Prices go from $1300 to $1840.
